They made marginal improvement to 4-9-1 in 1971, but the real gain that year was establishing Pastorini as the starting quarterback.

After selecting Pastorini with their first-round pick, they also drafted Lynn Dickey with their next pick. The Oilers also had veteran QB Charley Johnson, who started 10 games in 1970, his first season with the Oilers.

The 1971 season began with Dickey starting games 1 & 3 (with Johnson in relief) and Johnson starting games 2 & 4 (with Pastorini in relief). The net result? 3 losses and 1 tie.

Pastorini then started 8 of the final 10 games, including all 4 of their wins (3 wins in the final 3 weeks!) His #1 QB status was sealed, and Johnson was shipped off to Denver before the following season. (Dickey also missed the 1972 season, and never started more than 4 games in his remaining 3 years with the Oilers.)

As a team, the Oilers suffered through two 1-13 seasons before breaking even at 7-7 in 1974.

Charley Johnson was the Cardinals’ 10th-round pick in 1960, and was their starting QB from 1962-66, and 1969. He backed up Jim Hart in ’67 and ’68, primarily because he was in the Army for those 2 years and received weekend passes to play on Sundays. After 2 seasons with the Oilers, he was the Broncos’ starting QB from 1972-74, and for part of 1975.

Joe Dawkins was the Oilers’ starting fullback as a rookie in 1970. After splitting the ’71 season between the Oilers and Broncos, he was the starting fullback for the Broncos (1972-73) and Giants (1974-75) before returning to the Oilers in 1976 as a backup.

Jerry LeVias was the Oilers’ 2nd-round pick in 1969. He started half the games as a rookie (making his only Pro-Bowl) and every game in 1970. He played for the Chargers from 1971-74.

Alvin Reed was Houston’s starting tight end every season from 1967 to 1971, making 2 Pro Bowls in that time. He also played for the Redskins from 1973-75.

Glen Ray Hines played 8 seasons, playing every game and starting all but 6. He was the Oilers’ right tackle for 5 seasons, then moved on to the Saints for 2 years , before finishing up with the Steelers in 1973.

Roy Gerela was the Oilers’ 4th-round pick in 1969. He played every game for the next 10 seasons – 2 years with Houston followed by 8 higher-profile seasons with the Steelers. While with Pittsburgh, he made the Pro Bowl in ’72 and ’74. He finished his career with 9 games for the Chargers in 1979.

George Webster was drafted in the first round by the Oilers in 1967. He started every game for his first 3 years at left linebacker, and was first-team All-Pro each year. He missed half of the 1970 season, but returned in ’71 to start 9 games. He played part of ’72 and all of ’73 for the Steelers, before finishing up with 3 seasons for the Patriots.

Zeke Moore was the Oilers’ 5th-round pick in 1967. He played 11 seasons (all for the Oilers) and was a starting cornerback in all but 3 seasons.

A 9th-round pick in 1967, Ken Houston went on to play 14 seasons, and was his team’s starting strong safety every year. His first 6 were with the Oilers, followed by 8 with the Redskins. Houston made the Pro Bowl every season but his first and last. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1986.

Spike Jones was the Oilers’ 4th-round pick in 1970. (Burning a 4th pick for a punter?) They were 6-6-2 the previous season, and Gerela had done an adequate job of punting.) After just one season in Houston, Jones spent 4 with the Bills and 3 with the Eagles.

To recap: Reed, Gerela, Webster, Moore, and Houston played regularly for the Oilers in 1971, Johnson was a backup, and Dawkins played half a season before he was traded to Denver. LeVias, Hines, and Jones had already moved on before 1971.

(Cardinals - April 2014; Bills - July 2016; It seems like I should have posted something in 2018.)

Well, this Bengals post has been sitting in draft mode since January 2018. As I recall, I had it mostly completed when the Blogger gremlins attacked. In the middle of me typing something, the cursor highlighted all the text, therefore replacing everything with whatever character I last typed. Immediately, autosave kicked in, wiping out everything I did. AARGH! I hate when that happens.

That happened a few times on my baseball blogs (Tommie Agee, Joe Rudi, maybe others), so since November 2012 I have been composing my baseball posts in Word documents, then pasting them into Blogger. (I haven't learned that lesson yet for my football blogs.)

So my new football blog format (as detailed here) is to scan the cards in groups of 8 or 9, to minimize the number of scans per post (which is what is mostly holding me back).

Seems odd that there's three offensive linemen in this set, but not one running back or receiver.

In 1970 (the franchise’s 3rd season), the Bengals won their division with a so-so 8-6 record. In 1971 they fell to last place, finishing at 4-10. (The Browns and Steelers were much improved over 1970.)

He led the AFL in passing, but ruined his career in the process.

The Bengals acquired Virgil Carter from the Bears in 1970, and he piloted the team for 2 seasons (21 starts) until Ken Anderson took over in 1972.
Carter only started 1 game in 1972, then after 2 seasons in the WFL, joined the Chargers in 1975. He played 1 game for them and 8 games (no starts) for the Bears in 1976.

Bob Johnson was the 2nd overall pick in the 1968 draft. He played for 12 seasons (all with the Bengals) and was their starting center for all but his last 2 seasons. He made the Pro Bowl in his rookie year.

Pat Matson played for the Broncos in ’66 and ’67, then was the Bengals’ starting right guard from 1968-1974. You may recall that Paul Brown used “messenger guards”, so there were 3 guards with regular playing time. He finished his career in 1975 with the Packers.

Ernie Wright was the Chargers’ starting left tackle for their first 8 seasons (1960-67). Acquired by the Bengals in the expansion draft, he started at LT for the next 4 seasons before returning to the Chargers in 1972.

Horst Muhlmann kicked for the Bengals for six seasons (1969-74) and the Eagles for 2 ½ seasons (1975-77). A soccer player from Germany, he passed away in his homeland in 1991 at age 51.

Royce Berry was the Bengals’ 7th pick in the 1969 draft. He was their starting left end for 5 seasons, then rode the bench in 1974. After missing the 1975 season with a broken wrist, he played for the Bears in 1976.

Steve Chomyszak was drafted by the Jets in 1966. He spent most of that season on the taxi squad (only playing 2 games) and missed the 1967 season with an ankle injury. He played defensive end for the Bengals from 1968-69, then was the starting right D tackle from 1970-72. After spending much of 1973 on the bench, in the spring of 1974 Chomyszak signed a contract with the WFL’s Philadelphia Bell to play once the Bengals’ ’74 season ended. A ticked-off Paul Brown traded him to the Bills, where he saw no playing time, and was cut early in the season.

Bill Bergey was the Bengals’ 2nd-round pick in the 1969 draft. He started at middle linebacker for the next 5 seasons. Traded to the Eagles, he started at MLB (later LILB) from 1974-1980, except for missing all but 3 games in 1979. He made the Pro Bowl in his rookie season, and in his first 5 seasons in Philly.

Ken Avery was the Giants’ starting right linebacker in 1967 and 1968. He played for the Bengals from 1969-74, and was their starting right linebacker from 1970-72. He also played middle linebacker in 1974. He finished his career in 1975 with the Chiefs.

Lemar Parrish was the Bengals’ starting left corner from 1970-77, making 6 Pro Bowls in that time. He was also the Redskins’ starting left cornerback from 1978-81, making 2 more Pro Bowls and was named first team All-Pro in 1979. He was a backup for the Bills in his final season (1982).

Jim from Downingtownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01537007940455183397noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9040419911437637331.post-88841872442129842672020-06-21T23:22:00.000-04:002020-06-22T02:57:40.392-04:00RIP - Jim KiickJim Kiick, halfback for the great Miami Dolphins teams of the early 1970s, passed away on June 19, 2020 at age 73.

Kiick was drafted by the Dolphins in 1968, and was their starting halfback for the next 4 seasons, teaming up with fullback Larry Csonka in their "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" backfield.
Kiick made the Pro Bowl in his first 2 seasons, and led the AFL with 9 rushing touchdowns in 1969.

In 1972 and 1973 he only started a handful of games, as Mercury Morris became the featured halfback. Kiick was used primarily on passing downs and short-yardage situations.

In 1974 he started half the games, but that was his final season with Miami.

He joined Dolphins' teammates Csonka and Paul Warfield on the WFL's Memphis team for the 1975 season. The league folded before the end of the season, so he was back in the NFL in 1976.

Although wanting to join Csonka with the 1976 Giants, he ended up with the Denver Broncos. He was released late in the 1977 season, but caught on with the Redskins for 1 game, then retired after the season.
Curtis was the Colts' #1 pick in the 1965 draft. He made the Pro Bowl 5 times between 1968 and 1974.

Mike played in Super Bowls III and V. His late-game interception set up the Colts' last-second winning field goal in Super Bowl V.

In 1971 he famously decked a fan for running out on the field during a game.

Curtis later played for Seattle and Washington from 1976-78.
I know, I can attempt to resuscitate my 4 football card blogs!

I have 9 more teams to post on this 1971 blog, but that can wait for awhile. I needed something more interesting for a comeback post.

These are the 54 Hall of Famers in the 1971 Topps set. There were 261 players (+ two checklists) in the set, but before we decide that a 20% ratio of HOFers is a large chunk, keep in mind that before 1973 only the top 8 to 10 players on each team had a card anyway.
Simpson).

After minor improvement to 4-10 in 1969 and 3-10-1 in 1970, the 1971 squad fell back to 1-13, once again giving them the #1 overall pick (Walt Patulski). It would be 1973 until they finished over .500 again.
Dennis Shaw was the Bills' 2nd-round pick in 1970, and was the starting QB for his first 3 seasons. After backing-up rookie Joe Ferguson in 1973, Shaw finished his career as the Cardinals' backup QB in '74 and '75.
What a varied career O.J. Simpson has had! Running back, rental car pitchman, broadcaster, movie star, and criminal. He was the #1 overall pick in 1969, but didn't really produce until his 4th season, when the Bills finally assembled a good team around him. Simpson was a 5-time Pro Bowler (1972-76), and led the NFL in rushing 4 times during that span, including a record 2003 yards in 1973. After being limited to 7 games in 1977, he finished his career with 2 seasons in San Francisco ('78, '79). The Juice was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1985.
Haven Moses was the Bills' #1 pick in 1968, and was their starting split end for his first 4 years. After splitting the 1972 season between the Bills and the Broncos, he was one of Denver's starting wide receivers from 1973 to 1980. Haven caught a career-high 54 passes in 1979. He finished his career as a part-time player for the Broncos in 1981.
Austin Denney was drafted by the Cowboys in 1966, but did not play that season. He found work as the Bears' starting tight end from 1967-69, replacing the traded Mike Ditka. He was the Bills' starting tight end in 1970, and played 1 game for them in 1971, his final season.
Joe O'Donnell was drafted by the Bills (and Packers) in 1964, and played his entire 7-year career with the Bills (1964-67, 69-71), the last 5 seasons as their starting right guard. He also played for the WFL's Birmingham team in 1974 and 1975.
Someone forgot to tell Howard he's a tackle, not a center! Howard Kindig was drafted by the Chargers in 1964, and was their starting defensive end from 1965 until midway through the 1967 season. Traded to Buffalo during the 1967 season, he switched to offensive tackle and played for the Bills through the 1971 season. Kindig also played for the Dolphins ('72) and the Jets ('74).
Edgar Chandler was the Bills' 4th pick in the 1968 draft, and was an outside linebacker for his first 2 seasons. He started at MLB during the 1970 and 1971 seasons, but was limited to 1 game in 1972. He finished his career in 1973 as the Patriots' starting middle linebacker.
Drafted by the Bills in 1966, Paul Guidry played 7 seasons in Buffalo and was the starting left linebacker from 1968 to 1972. He finished his career with the Oilers in 1973.

"Butch" Byrd was the Bills' 4th pick in the 1964 draft, and was their starting right cornerback for his first 7 seasons, making 5 Pro Bowls during that time. After the 1970 season, he moved on to the Broncos as a spare defensive back in his final season.
John Pitts was the Bills' #1 pick in the 1967 draft, and played 6 full seasons in Buffalo, the final 4 as a starting safety. John split the 1973 season between Buffalo and Denver, and after a full season as a Broncos' backup in 1974, he spent his final season (1975) on Denver's and Cleveland's bench.
They are mostly starting quarterbacks who were missing from the 1971 Topps set, including the top three picks from the 1971 draft.

After losing Super Bowl V following the 1970 season, the Cowboys switched from Craig Morton to Roger Staubach as their starting QB, and won Super Bowl VI. Staubach's rookie card is in the 1972 set.

Jim Plunkett was the #1 pick in the 1971 draft. Replacing veteran Joe Kapp (who was released following a contract dispute), Plunkett took every snap during his rookie season.

Archie Manning was the #2 pick in the 1971 draft. With 4-year starter Billy Kilmer traded to the Redskins after 1970, Manning started 10 of the 14 games in his rookie season.

Dan Pastorini was the #3 pick in the 1971 draft. He started 8 games as a rookie, while incumbent veteran Charley Johnson started 4 games. The Oilers 3rd-round pick in '71 was QB Lynn Dickey, who made 2 starts in 1971. Pastorini was also the team's punter for 5 of his first 6 seasons.

There was no Eagles' QB in the 1971 set, as previous starter Norm Snead was traded to the Vikings after the 1970 season, and Pete Liske was acquired from the Denver Broncos just prior to the start of training camp in 1971. Here we see him in the white helmet that the Eagles wore for a few seasons in the early 1970s.

Another Eagle (and a card that was already featured on John's blog) is a corrected Adrian Young card. Topps issued a card for Young in 1971, but it included the photo of another Eagles' player by mistake.

John has made several other custom football cards for me, all starting quarterbacks who were missing from the 1967, 1968, and 1969 sets. I will be featuring them on my other blogs in the coming months.

John, thank you very much for these cards!Jim from Downingtownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01537007940455183397noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9040419911437637331.post-50119731856151564512014-04-27T21:02:00.001-04:002014-05-01T00:23:52.557-04:00St. Louis CardinalsHere are the 1971 Cardinals. They sure have a lot of all-stars for a team that finished 8-5-1, but I guess that record was a real accomplishment for a team that finished 4-9-1 in every other season between 1969 and 1973.

Jim Hart was an undrafted free agent signed by the Cardinals in 1966. After riding the bench behind veteran Charley Johnson as a rookie, Hart was the starting QB for the next 15 years (except for 1969, when Johnson regained the starting job, and in 1972, when Hart and two others shared the starting assignments.) Hart was the backup behind Neil Lomax in '82 and '83, then finished his career with the Redskins in 1984. He was a 4-time Pro-Bowler (1974-77).

MacArthur Lane was the Cardinals' #1 pick in 1968. After riding the bench as a rookie, he returned kicks in 1969, then became the featured back for the '70 and '71 seasons, leading the NFL with 11 rushing TDs in 1970 while making his only Pro Bowl.

After the '71 season, he was traded to Green Bay for running back Donny Anderson, and was the Packers' top back for 3 seasons. Lane moved on to the Chiefs, where he played his final 4 seasons (1975-78). He was the starter only in 1976, leading the NFL with 66 receptions that season.

Johnny Roland was a 4th-round pick in 1965, but didn't play until 1966. He was a starting back for the Cardinals from 1966-71, and made the Pro Bowl in his first 2 seasons. Roland's final season (1973) was spent as the Giants' starting fullback.

A 10th-round pick in 1963, Jackie Smith was the Cardinals' starting tight end for 13 seasons (1963-75). He was also the team's punter for 3 seasons (1964-66), and made the Pro Bowl for 5 consecutive seasons (1966-70). After 2 seasons as a backup, Smith finished his career in 1978 with the Cowboys, appearing in Super Bowl XIII against the Steelers.

Ernie McMillan was drafted by the Cardinals in the 13th round in 1961, and also by the Boston Patriots in the 29th round of the AFL draft. He was the Cardinals' starting right tackle from 1961-73, then moved to the left side in 1974. Ernie was the Packers starting left tackle in his final season (1975). McMillan made 4 Pro Bowls while with the Cardinals.
Jim Bakken was drafted in 1963, and spent his entire 17-year career with the Cardinals. He made the Pro Bowl 4 times ('65, '67, '75, '76), led the NFL in field goal percentage in '65 and '67, and led the NFL with 117 points in 1967. Jim was also the team's punter in '65 and '66 (and briefly in later year).
Larry Stallings was the Cardinals' 18th-round pick in 1963, but parlayed that into a 14-year career, every one of them as the Cardinals' starting left linebacker. Stallings ran back a fumble for a TD in both 1965 and 1969, and made the Pro Bowl in 1970.
Roger Wehrli was the Cardinals' #1 pick in the 1969 draft, and spent the next 13 seasons as a starting defensive back for the Cards. Usually the right cornerback, he played left corner as a rookie, and strong safety in 1972. Wehrli made the Pro Bowl 7 times during those 13 seasons. He was a backup DB in his final season (1982).
Miller Farr began his career in 1965 as the Broncos' strong safety. He played for the Chargers at the end of that season and all of 1966. Farr's best seasons were 1967-69, playing left cornerback for the Houston Oilers. He made the Pro Bowl in all three seasons, and led the league with 10 interceptions in 1967.

He moved on to the Cardinals in 1970, starting at cornerback for 3 seasons. Miller finished his career as a backup with the Lions in 1973. His brother Mel was a running back for the Lions from 1967-73.
Larry Wilson is the only Hall-of-Famer here, and the only Cardinal in the past 60 years to have his number retired for his on-field accomplishments. (J. V. Cain and Pat Tillman also had their numbers retired, after their untimely deaths.)

Wilson was a 7th-round pick in 1960, and was the Cardinals' starting free safety for his entire 13-year career (1960-72). He made the Pro Bowl every season from 1962 to 1970 (except 1964), and led the NFL with 10 interceptions in 1966. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1978.
The Bears just came off a 3rd-place, 6-8 season, and repeated that in 1971. The only bright spot here is that Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus would eventually make the Fall of Fame.

Jack Concannon was the first overall pick (by the Patriots) in the 1964 AFL draft, and the Eagles' 2nd-round pick. The Bears acquired him from the Eagles in 1967 for tight end Mike Ditka. He was the starter for 3 seasons, and shared the job with Bobby Douglass in 1969. After starting 13 games in 1970, he lost the job to Douglass in 1971 due to injury. After 2 seasons on the Cowboys' taxi squad, Jack finished up with the Packers in '74 and Lions in '75.

Bobby Douglass was the Bears' #2 pick in 1969, and was a "running" quarterback, and not too successful as a passer. Except for 1970, he was the starter from 1969 to 1973, and part of 1974. Douglass was traded to the Chargers during the 1975 season, and also played for the Saints ('76-'77) and Packers ('78). Bobby also pitched 4 games for the White Sox' triple-A team in 1979.

The Bears owned the 3rd and 4th picks in the 1965 draft. At #3 they selected Gale Sayers, and selected Dick Butkus at #4. Sayers was the team's starting halfback for the next 5 seasons, and led the NFL in rushing yards in 1966 (1231) and 1969 (1032). He was also 1st-team All-Pro in his first 5 seasons. Sayers returned punts in his rookie season, and returned kicks for his 1st 5 seasons, scoring 6 TDs as a kick returner.

Gale famously injured his knee in the 9th game of the 1968 season, and missed the remaining 5 games. His other knee was injured in 1970, causing him to miss 12 games in 1970 and 12 games in 1971. Sayers retired after the 1972 pre-season, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1977.

Dick Gordon was drafted by the Bears in the 7th round in 1965, and was their starting split end from 1966-71. He also returned kicks from 1965-69 and was also the punt returner in 1967. In 1966, he had a 94-yard kick return (leading the NFL). In 1970, Gordon also led the NFL in receptions (71) and receiving TDs (13). He made the Pro Bowl as a Bear in '70 and '71, then his career seemed to fall apart, as he spent the next 3 seasons as a sub for the Rams, Packers, and Chargers before retiring.

Cecil Turner was a 5th-round pick in 1968, and played from 1968-73, all with the Bears. He was primarily a kick returner, but was also their starting flanker during his rookie season. In 1970, he returned 4 kicks for touchdowns, and made his only Pro Bowl appearance.

Mac Percival was the Bears' kicker from 1967-72 (and 4 games in 1973). He played with the Cowboys for part 1974, kicking in 3 games.

Ed O'Bradovich played for 10 seasons (1962-71), all with the Bears. He was the starting left defensive end as a rookie, then spent 3 seasons as a backup before regaining the starting post in 1966, which he would hold for the remainder of his career (although moving to right end for his last 3 seasons).

Dick Butkus was drafted in the 1st round in 1965, out of Illinois (the same school that produced Ray Nitschke). He was the team's starting middle linebacker every season, until injuries prematurely ended his career in his 9th season. Butkus made the Pro Bowl in his first 8 seasons, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1979.

Lee Roy Caffey was drafted by the Eagles in 1963, and was their starting left linebacker as a rookie. He was traded to the Packers before the next season, and manned the right linebacker post for Green Bay from 1964-69, including making All-Pro in '65 and '66. He started for the Bears in 1970, and was a backup in 1971 (Cowboys) and 1972 (Chargers).

Doug Buffone was selected by the Bears in the 1966 draft, and played his entire 14-year career for Chicago. He was the team's starting left linebacker every season but '66, '76 (missed 12 games), and '79.
In 1970 (their last season as the "Boston" Patriots), the team went 2-12 under the leadership of QB Joe Kapp (his only season with the team). That was bad enough for last-place, and the Pats used their first overall pick in the 1971 draft to select Heisman Trophy winning QB Jim Plunkett, who would play every down in 1971.

Joe Kapp played in Canada from 1959-66, then came down to Minnesota in 1967 after QB Fran Tarkenton's trade to the Giants. After 3 seasons with the Vikings (culminating in a loss to the Chiefs in Super Bowl IV), Kapp headed to Boston, replacing Mike Taliaferro as the starting QB.

By the time this card came out, Kapp was out of football, a victim of contract issues instigated by Pete Rozelle. After football, he went into acting, playing small parts in TV shows and movies, including The Longest Yard.

Mike Taliaferro was a generic AFL QB (like Don Trull and Jackie Lee), but somehow managed to play in the AFL All-Star game in 1969, despite leading his team to a 4-10 record.

The Jets' 28th-round pick in 1963, he didn't play that season, but was the backup from 1964-67 (while also starting 5 games during Joe Namath's rookie season in 1965). Mike was the Patriots' starting QB for half of 1968 and all of 1969, then backed up Kapp in '70. I'm pretty sure he was the backup in 1971, but there's no record of that because he did not play (with Plunkett taking every snap). Mike also played for the Bills in 1972 and the WFL's Houston Texans in 1974.

Carl Garrett was drafted by the Boston Patriots in 1969, and played four seasons with the team as the starting halfback, kick returner, and punt returner. Garrett played 2 seasons with the Bears (1973-74), then 1 with the Jets and 2 with the Raiders. He was primarily a kick returner with Oakland.

Jim Nance was drafted by the Patriots out of Syracuse University in 1965, and was their starting fullback for 7 seasons. At 240 pounds, he was huge for a fullback at that time. Nance led the AFL is rushing yards in 1966 (1458) and 1967 (1216), and made the All-Star team in both seasons. He also led the AFL with 11 TDs in 1966.

Jim was traded to the Eagles in 1972 but chose not to play for them and retired. He came back to play for the Jets in 1973, and the WFL's Shreveport Steamer in 1974-75. Nance died in 1992 at age 49.

Ron Sellers was the Patriots' #1 pick in 1969. After an all-star rookie season, he was injured the following season, and was eventually traded to the Super Bowl champion Cowboys in 1972. He became the starter midway through the season (replacing Bob Hayes), but was traded to the Super Bowl champion Dolphins in 1973, where he rarely played.

Bake Turner was drafted by the Colts in 1962, and followed coach Weeb Ewbank to the Jets in 1963. Bake was a starting end for 2 seasons with the Jets, making the All-Star team in 1963 while collecting over 1000 receiving yards. He started 4 games in 1965, but rookie George Sauer took over the starting job for most of the season.

Turner continued as the team's top kick returner, and although he wasn't one of Joe Namath's top two targets, he was Joe's wingman for off-field shenanigans. Bake remained with the Jets through the 1969 season, then wrapped up his career in 1970 as a starting wide receiver for the Patriots.

Ron Berger played semi-pro football from 1965-67, then was with the Rams in 1968. He played for the Patriots from 1969-72 (and was a starter in 1970), and was with the Dolphins in 1973 (although he did not play).

Marty Schottenheimer was drafted by the Bills in 1965 and was a backup middle linebacker there for 4 seasons before going to the Patriots, where he was a backup linebacker for 2 seasons. Topps almost ran out of room on this card for his name! I'm sure the back of his jersey was just as crowded.

Marty began his coaching career in 1974 in the WFL, and was later the head coach for the Browns, Chiefs, Redskins, and Chargers.
John Bramlett was a starting right linebacker for 6 seasons (1965-70), two seasons each with the Broncos, Dolphins, and Patriots. He wrapped up his career in 1971 with the Falcons. Once nicknamed "The Meanest Man in Football", Bramlett is now a minister.
Tom Janik was the Broncos' 3rd-round pick in 1963, and was a backup defensive back there for 2 seasons, He also punted 10 times in 1964. Traded to the Bills in 1965, and was a starting defensive back for 4 seasons. In Buffalo's only win during the 1968 season, Janik returned an interception 100 yards for a TD. Tom moved on to the Patriots in 1969, where be began punting again, and was the team's punter for 3 seasons.
Of these 10 players below, five are veterans from the glory years, two began their careers the year of Super Bowl I (1966), and three others were rookies in 1970.

After years at the top, the Pack just went through 3 seasons coached by Lombardi's successor, Phil Bengston. During those seasons, they won 6, 8, and 6 games. 1971 was the first season with Dan Devine at the helm, but their win total dropped to 4. They rebounded in 1972 with a 10-4 record, and their first post-season since 1967. Unfortunately, they wouldn't see double-digit wins again until 1989.

Bart Starr played 16 seasons (1956-71), all for the Packers. He was their starting QB every season from 1957-70, until rookie Scott Hunter took over in Starr's last season (1971). Starr was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1977, and coached the Packers from 1975-83, never winning more than 8 games in a season.

Veteran Zeke Bratkowski was a backup QB for the Bears from 1954-60, then started for the Rams in '61 and '62. During the 1963 season, he was traded to Green Bay, where he served as Starr's caddy through 1968. After 2 years as a Packers' coach, he suited up in 1971 for one final season.

Donny Anderson was the Packers' #1 pick in 1965, and finished 4th in the Heisman voting. He began playing in 1966, but with Green Bay stocked at running back with Paul Hornung, Jim Taylor, and Elijah Pitts, Anderson returned punts and kicks during his first 2 seasons. He was also the team's punter for all but his rookie season. With the departure of Hornung and Taylor to the Saints in 1967, Donny was one of the team's leading rushers from 1967-71. Anderson was traded to the Cardinals prior to the 1972 season, and played there for 3 seasons.

A 17th (last) round pick in 1970, Larry Krause returned kicks for the Pack from 1970-74.

Gale Gillingham joined the Packers in 1966, and was a starting guard from 1967-76 (except for missing most of 1972 and all of 1975). He replaced Fuzzy Thurston at left guard in 1967, then moved to the right side in 1969 following Jerry Kramer's retirement. Gale was a 5-time Pro-Bowler.

Lionel Aldridge was drafted by the Packers in 1963, and was their starting right defensive end for the next 9 seasons. He also played for the Chargers from 1972-73. Aldridge passed away in 1998 at age 56.

Mike McCoy was the Packers' #1 pick (2nd overall) in 1970, and became the starting right defensive tackle, replacing the retired Henry Jordan, who had manned that post for 11 seasons. The following season, Mike and Bob Brown switched sides, with McCoy holding down left D-tackle for the next 6 seasons. He finished his career with the Raiders, Giants, and Lions from 1977-80.

Ray Nitschke was another of Lombardi's grizzled veterans. He was drafted by Green Bay in 1958 from the University of Illinois, 7 years before Dick Butkus was drafted from the same school. Ray was the team's starting MLB from 1958-70, followed by 2 seasons as a reserve, before retiring after 1972. Surprisingly, he only made 1 Pro Bowl. Nitschke was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1978.

Ken Ellis joined the Packers in 1970, replacing legendary cornerback Herb Adderley, who had been traded to the Cowboys. Ellis was a starting corner for Green Bay from 1970-75, then played for 5 other teams between 1976 and 1979.

Willie Wood was signed as a free agent in 1960, and played 12 seasons, all with the Packers. He was Green Bay's starting free safety in all but his rookie season, and returned punts every season. Wood was an 8-time Pro-Bowler, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1989.
You may be wondering why there is no quarterback card. Long-time veteran Norm Snead was traded to the Vikings in the off-season, and appears on a Vikings card (but in an Eagles' jersey). Snead was replaced by CFL quarterback Pete Liske, but not until just before training camp.

Aside from not including a quarterback, the position allocation seems a little strange here: 3 running backs, 2 wide receivers (including kick returner Billy Walik instead of veteran starter Ben Hawkins), no offensive linemen, and no middle linebacker.

Except for Tom Woodeshick, Harold Jackson, and Tim Rossovich, all of the cards here are the player's rookie card. The 1970 rookies (Lee Bouggess, Walik, Mark Moseley) appear in the team's current jerseys. Others are shown in the late-1960s' Eagles jersey with stripes around the shoulders.

I noticed today that although each player's card back contains a long narrative, most of them go into great detail about the player's college career, with only a sentence about their NFL accomplishments. I guess because it's the early-70s Eagles!

However he didn't make the team in 1971 (?!?) and was traded to the Bears. After 2 seasons in Chicago, he ended his career in 1973 with the Cowboys.
After missing the 1972 season with injuries, he returned for 1 final season with the Eagles in 1973, as a backup.
Drafted by the Rams in 1968, he was a starter for the Eagles from 1969-72, and led the NFL in receiving yards in 1969 and 1972. After the 1972 season, he returned to the Rams in the Roman Gabriel trade. Jackson played 5 more seasons for the Rams, and 4 with the Patriots. He finished as a backup with the Vikings (1982) and Seahawks (1983).

Billy Walik - Walik's NFL career consisted of 3 seasons (1970-72) with the Eagles as a kick returner and occasional punt returner. I'm not sure why he has a card, as he never scored on a return, and he rarely lined up as a receiver. (Meanwhile, #2 WR Ben Hawkins had over 30 catches and 4 TDs in 1970, but no card in 1971.)

Mark Moseley - Oh, what could have been! Moseley was drafted by the Eagles in 1970, and after a poor rookie season (56% of field goals made) where he was also pressed into service as a punter due to injuries, the Eagles gave up on him. After 2 seasons with the Oilers, Mark went on to kick for the Redskins for 12 years, leading the NFL in field goals 4 times.

After starting at left defensive end for 2 1/2 seasons, he moved to middle linebacker midway through the 1970 season, replacing long-time veteran Dave Lloyd. After the 1971 season, he moved on to the Chargers. Rossovich played for the WFL's Philadelphia Bell for the 1974-75 seasons, then returned to the NFL with the Oilers in 1976.

After football, Tim began acting, and appeared in various TV series, including "Magnum, P.I." (with his college roommate Tom Selleck), "MacGyver", "Knight Rider", and most notably 1980's "When the Whistle Blows".
After his 2nd season with the Eagles, Steve moved on to the Broncos and Rams before ending his career with the Seahawks in 1977.
After 2 seasons as a backup, Adrian was a starting outside linebacker in 1970. He missed almost all of 1971 due to injury, and was traded to the Lions early in the 1972 season. He finished his career in 1973 with the Bears.
One more thing: this picture is not Adrian Young - it's Rick Duncan. Duncan punted for 1 game with the Eagles in 1968, and was invited to their 1971 training camp, but didn't make the team. Below are Young's and Duncan's pages from the Eagles 1971 yearbook.
Four of the ten players are pictured in other teams' uniforms. In the early days, the Broncos seemed like the AFL's revolving door. In their first 8 seasons, Denver finished 2-11-1 twice, 3-11 twice, and 4-10 twice. After 2 straight 5-8-1 seasons, the Broncos slipped to 4-9-1 in 1971, bringing an end to Lou Saban's 5-year tenure as head coach.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 227px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VFYuAlZ9trY/TNn9P_rWC4I/AAAAAAAACwc/NvneTxy70V8/s320/1971%2BDon%2BHorn.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5537735668061834114" /> #59 Don Horn - Horn was the Packers' 1st-round draft pick in 1967, and after caddying for Bart Starr for 4 seasons, Don finally got his own gig in 1971 with the Broncos. He was Denver's 4th starting QB in 4 years, but the carousel didn't stop there. After 9 games, he lost his job to Steve Ramsey, who would be replaced in 1972 by ex-Cardinal Charlie Johnson. In 1972, Don wasted away as the Broncos' 3rd-string QB before moving on to Cleveland in 1973 and San Diego in 1974.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 225px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VFYuAlZ9trY/TNn9PSnRQLI/AAAAAAAACwU/dltZghGzsI0/s320/1971%2BFloyd%2BLittle.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5537735655965147314" /> #110 Floyd Little - One of the few Broncos' stars of the 1960s and early 1970s, Little was Denver's 1st-round pick in 1967, and played his entire career (1967-75) with the Broncos. Floyd led the NFL in rushing with 1133 yards in 1971, and his 12 TDs in 1973 also led the league. Beginning in 1964, Jim played every game for the next 16 seasons, first with the Jets (1964-70) and then the Broncos (1971-79). Turner kicked for the Jets in Super Bowl III and the Broncos in Super Bowl XII. Because the back of the card said "he can also fill in at quarterback", apparently in 1971 I felt the need to update his position on the front. He also kicked for the Rams (1975-76), Oilers (1977), and Bills (1978-79).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 229px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VFYuAlZ9trY/S-GoYHc0OHI/AAAAAAAACUE/NaSTd5jqDt0/s320/1971+Jackie+Burkett.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5467836554874730610" /> #251 Jackie Burkett - Jackie was the Colts' 1st-round pick in 1959. If I can catch up to my original schedule, all these football cards will be completed by Thanksgiving.

Here are the 1971 Oakland Raiders. Only 2 all-stars here (compared to the five on their arch-rival Kansas City Chiefs!) I just got the Charlie Smith card a few weeks ago, which was the last card I needed to complete the set.

In 1970 under 2nd-year coach John Madden, the team went 8-4-2, finishing 1st in the AFC West. In the playoffs, they beat the Dolphins, but lost the conference championship to the Colts. In 1971 they also finished 8-4-2, but that was only good enough for 2nd place, behind the Chiefs (10-3-1).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 225px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VFYuAlZ9trY/S8aYA-rAbKI/AAAAAAAACHE/i3aoXxPSX8I/s320/1971+Daryle+Lamonica.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460218740824108194" /> Daryle Lamonica - After 4 seasons as a backup in Buffalo, Lamonica came to Oakland in 1967 and was the #1 QB from 1967-72. (Actually, 3 of these players were already off the team by the time the cards came out.) Unlike the 3 teams already posted, there are no all-stars in this bunch. After all, it is 1971 and it is the Chargers!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 226px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VFYuAlZ9trY/S1N1K2ojBTI/AAAAAAAABNM/hzeeanFd4dU/s320/1971+John+Hadl.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5427810805236303154" /> #255 John Hadl - Hadl has been with the Chargers since 1962, and was the starting QB for all those seasons except 1963, when Tobin Rote led the team. After 1972, Hadl moved on to the Rams, Packers, and Oilers, retiring after the 1974 season.
A quick check of Pro-Football-Reference.com shows that they were just coming off a 1970 season where they finished 1st in the NFC West, with a 10-3-1 record (the 2nd best record in the NFC after Minnesota). They lost the NFC Championship game to the Cowboys.

In 1971, they slipped to 9-5, but still finished 1st in the division. In both seasons, they were 1 win ahead of the Rams.
In 1970, he was the league's MVP and leading passer. His last season as a fulltime starter was 1971, as he shared the QB job with Steve Spurrier in 1972 & 1973.

#129 Ken Willard - This card tells us that Willard led the 49ers in rushing for each of his 1st 6 seasons (1965-70). After 9 seasons as a 49ers regular, Ken finished his career as a bit player with the Cardinals in 1974.
In 1970, he led the league with 1100 receiving yards. Washington was the 49ers' star receiver for 9 years, then missed the 1978 season. In 1979, he finished his career with the Lions.
He was drafted as a linebacker, and switched to tackle in his 2nd season. Cas was the 49ers' starting right tackle for the remainder of his career.

He played in 2 Pro Bowls.

Charlie didn't play during his rookie season of 1958, but he was a fixture on the 49ers' defensive line from 1959 through 1973. After a few seasons at defensive end, he was the 49ers' starting left defensive tackle for the rest of his career. This is one of the few lineman's cards with a statistics chart on the back, thanks to an interception in 1969.
He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2000. (I always thought he looked like Gilligan on this card.)
At the end of the previous season, the Cowboys lost to the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl V, on a last-second field goal.

There are 11 Cowboys' football cards (instead of the usual allotment of 10) in 1971, but I think the Billy Truax card was intended to be a Rams card. The text on the back of Truax' card implies he's still a Ram, and there were only 9 Rams' cards this year.
Hill missed much of the 1970 season due to injuries, but the Cowboys just plugged 1970 rookie Duane Thomas in Hill's place, and Thomas rushed for 803 yards as the Cowboys marched to the Super Bowl!
I collected football cards in 1967 and 1968, but not in '69 or '70. In 1971, I jumped back into collecting. (You can read my football card back-story here on my 1967 football card blog.)

The 1971 card set consisted of 261 player cards and 2 checklists. This works out to 10 players for each of the 26 teams. The NFC cards have blue borders, while the AFC cards have red borders. There are no "special" cards in this set, but some of the players are designated as all-stars, and have half-red/half-blue borders.

In each post, I will include all the players for one team. I will not be scanning the card backs, but in this introductory post, I am including a sample card back, and the checklists.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 279px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VFYuAlZ9trY/SxqaUWUp8dI/AAAAAAAAAtI/HQ_jGxhrJA4/s400/1971+Checklists+(front).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5411807576619348434" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 278px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VFYuAlZ9trY/SxqaUCx3dwI/AAAAAAAAAtA/H1XW-KfafIw/s400/1971+Checklists+(back).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5411807571373160194" /> Here you can see that back in 1971, I collected all the cards except #21 Charlie Smith, a running back for the Raiders. I got that card last week, so my set is complete!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 225px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VFYuAlZ9trY/SxqaYjCeddI/AAAAAAAAAtQ/msMHLpTSoeI/s320/1971+card+back.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5411807648752235986" /> All player card backs have this same layout, except that linemen don't have a stat chart (unless they happened to run back a fumble for a touchdown!)

First up: The Dallas Cowboys
.Jim from Downingtownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01537007940455183397noreply@blogger.com0
